Inspiration & Colour range

For Autumn/Winter 11 the Griffin collection takes inspiration from the new home of the Griffin Studio, Hartland in North Devon, a peninsula on the Jurassic coast in the South West of England. Located within a mile of the sea this dramatic coastline has led us to take a fresh approach to some of our heritage styles. As we address the way we live personally, our new home has allowed us to move to a more self-sufficient lifestyle which is reflected in the new collection by selecting quality milled wool from British fabric manufacturers Fox Brothers in nearby Somerset and sustainable Italian manufacturing. With more styles embracing the seam free bonding techniques than ever before, technology and innovation is at the forefront of this collection, with existing styles such as the Imber jacket incorporating these new technologies for the first time. The softshell also merges tradition with technology mixing traditional English tweeds with stitch-less bonding techniques whilst the Down Bearskin coat returns in its boldest design yet, available in a snow camouflage developed by Italian mill Limonta, whilst other favourites such as the Guerilla pant and the biker pant are also re-introduced this season. With five new jacket designs including the feather down-filled Bude jacket and Brushed Cotton Stibb Jacket.

This season we bring together a mix of fabrics from traditional tweeds to wet-look cottons and 3 layer technical fabrics. We’ve also worked high shine nylons with bubble fleeces to give the ultimate textural contrast to a number of pieces. Bold camouflages meet subtle hues, accentuated by a refreshing flash of cobalt blue. We have experimented with a number of different washes this season including a distressed effect available in Sand, Khaki and Midnight Blue, as well as a vintage wash effect available in Grey, Dove and Cobalt Blue. Over-dyed on the finest Italian cottons including a luxurious brushed cotton sourced just 3 miles from our factory in Bergamo.

Fusing the modern techniques of technical 3 layer fabric bonding, the use of traditional Fox Brothers wool and tweed fabrics, and the heritage inspired over-dye and distressed hues have all resulted in a bold and exciting collection that not only represents the Griffin ethos of “Technology meets Tradition”, but also subtly underlines the importance of transparency and a sustainable future.

Collaborations

Sourcing our fabrics and manufacturing locally has always been an important part of the Griffin philosophy and this season we are working with local wool and flannel manufacturers Fox Brothers who are based close by in Wellington, Somerset. Established over 250 years ago the manufacturers are credited as the first original creators of flannel cloth. They continue to produce heritage tweeds and worsted cloths from fleece sourced from local Exmoor sheep, which are then spun using local spinners. The wool is then woven on the looms at their factory in Wellington and then sold internationally to renowned designers and manufacturers, including Prada and Gucci. A shared approach to production first drew us to their fabrics four seasons ago and this season we have chosen some of the mill’s most luxurious wools and tweeds. We aspire to eventually keep our own sheep and produce our own wools but until then we continue to support our local mills.

Key Pieces

Jackets

The ‘Quay Coat’ is an entirely new style for the Autumn/Winter collection. Indulgently produced in a fantastic heavy-weight wool from the Fox Brothers Mill this piece encapsulates this seasons mix of tradition meets technology and has been manufactured using the welding process used in our more technical pieces, whilst the others pieces have a more technical/sportswear feel the Quay coat holds onto it’s Pea Coat heritage, with a large collar and oversized lapels. All the internal seam have been taped with rubber waterproofing seam tape. This piece is beautifully tailored with a fitted, two-panel set in sleeve and centre back vent. The coat features two slant front pockets, laser cut with a raw edge finish.

The ‘Imber’ jacket takes on a completely new look this season, working with the same seam free technique as the Technical Bearskin the jacket has been constructed using the latest bonding techniques. Available in a 3 layer waterproof fabric this semi-tailored jacket has the look of a heritage Mackintosh which is surprising given it’s high-tech construction. The Imber features hunting style pockets and two large flap pockets running from the front of the jacket around the side. The collar is styled with a military tab and fastened with 4 centre front buttons. This season we are also offering the style in a traditional English Tweed in collaboration with Fox Brothers.

The ‘Down Parka’ is a design that has evolved this season from the Pocket Parka and previously our Down Bearskin The design features large flap fastened patch pockets and two slanted chest pockets. This Parka style coat has been manufactured in two colourways offering two distinctively different looks to the style. The first is made from a Limonta Nylon, a bold white-based camouflage whilst the second is made from Dolmias Nylon in Black and trimmed with camo in the brim of the hood. Both designs are insulated with a layer of down filling, offering superior warmth and fitted with a parka style hood, which opens out flat. Fastened with a RiRi zip with a button-up storm flap.

Griffin’s heritage ‘Minehead Coat’ returns this season in it’s purest form yet. Manufactured in heavy-weight Fox brother’s wool this A-line design is technically manufactured with all internal seams taped with waterproof rubber tape. All pieces have been laser cut leaving a raw edge at the hem, along the edge of the hood and on the cuffs, the two front slant pockets have also been laser cut. This season the Minehead also features a laser cut front pocket which runs horizontally in line with the centre front. Fastened with large buttons all manufactured to the highest quality in Italy and fitted with adjustable toggles on the hood to adjust the fit. The silhouette is slim and tailored for a well-fitted look and overall minimalist style.

The ‘Technical Bearskin’ returns for the autumn/winter 10 season, a design that originates from a style we became famed for in the mid 90’s, the Bearskin was a coat that featured side seam zips and when opened up and laid flat replicated the shape of the skin of a bear. Articulated to fit the body, this jacket is finished with waterproof taped zips along the side seams and underarms, which can be opened as pit zips for ventilation, or fully unzipped to open flat into the Griffin Bearskin shape. On a technical note, this jacket is kitted out with all the essentials; including 4 front pockets with bonded waterproof zips, a double storm flap on the front with a stand collar and concealed hood, plus the sleeves and back panel are fitted with volume adjusters. This season we have added a parka style fishtail hem to the design and to offer a real hybrid of technology meets tradition we are offering the style in traditional Fox Bothers Tweed. The style is also available in a Limited Edition all over black and an all over natural, both 3 layer waterproof fabrics from Italian mill Limonta. The design features stitch-free seams bonded together and although bonding technical man-made fabrics to each other is a technique used by many outdoorwear sports brands, what we have done is bonded a natural fiber (wool tweed) with a synthetic (3 layer black Limonta fabric) making the construction behind this piece really special.

The ‘Wellington Jacket’ jacket is a new style for the Autumn/Winter 11 season, this is a real stand out piece thanks to the jacket’s contrasting fabric choice, Limonta high shine nylon meets a textural bubble fleece base offering superior warmth and water-resistance in all the right places. The raglan sleeves are ergonomically designed for a great, flexible fit and trimmed with Swedish Camouflage piping. The fit is slim and features a contrasting nylon panel on the chest which is fitted with a waterproof taped zip. The jacket is fastened with the same taped zip in an off-centre position down the front of the jacket and the high neck collar is shaped like a smog mask. The style is available in both black and white bubble fleece options as a limited edition garment.

The ‘Exmoor Softshell’ gets it’s name from the sheep which it’s fleece originates. Featuring Fox Brothers Tweed the jacket is manufactured using the fleece of sheep based just an hour from the Griffin Studio. The Tweed is a deep olive with an orange plaid woven through, mixed with the technical Softshell fabric with a lightly fleeced back – this piece is again a real mix of tradition working with technology. The main body panels have been bonded instead of stitch giving a really clean finish. The fit is slim with a high neck and smog mask shaping along the top. Made in Italy this piece is a Limited Edition design.

The ‘Ashford Jacket’ screams for attention with the mix of contrasting fabrics, where Limonta’s snow camouflage meets the textural bubble fleece. The under arm and side panels also feature flexible polar fleece to allow for plenty of movement. Available in both black and white bubble fleece options as a Limited Edition, the piece has been manufactured in Italy. The sleeves are also piped with camouflage detailing and the front panel features two front staggered horizontal chest pockets, taped and fully waterproof.

The ‘Bude Jacket’, a down design, manufactured in Limonta nylon which has been bonded instead of stitched, and then filled with feather-down to insulate giving a padded finish to the front panel. Backed with Polar Fleece and trimmed with camouflage piping the jacket is fitted to give a flattering finish to a design that often perceived as bulky due to the down panelling, we’ve made sure the jacket is fully flexible, thanks to the ergonomic cut to both the body panel and the sleeves. Made in Italy this piece is a Limited Edition desing.

Made from a luxurious brushed cotton manufactured just 3 miles away from our factory in Bergamo, the ‘Stibb Jacket’ is a fantastic flight jacket which has been overdyed to give a washed, casual look. A great garment to just throw on as a jacket or even a mid-layer under a larger jacket. The jacket has a high neck and two vertical gun metal zip pockets fitted either side of the centre front zip at chest height. Manufactured in Italy to the highest quality this jacket is available in Mignight, Tobbaco and Ash Grey.

Trousers & Shorts

The ‘USMC Pant’ is a style we have developed for a number of years and for a number of seasons has become Griffin’s best selling pant. First developed from a 1945 boiler suit the USMC trouser is a wide leg pant with a low slung crotch. Fitted with large combat pockets and adjustable tabs at the hem these trousers offer a really comfortable fit. This season the USMC is available in a selection of seasonal colours including Military Olive, Slate and Midnight with a distressed wash all available in a medium-weight Italian cotton.

The ‘Archback trouser’ is an iconic Griffin style and was originally developed from a vintage climbing trouser. With ergonomically designed legs and darted knees, the fit is slimmer this season with a low slung crotch. The Archback panel is of course the pant’s most distinctive detail and a feature we can only achieve due to the flexibility of our great Italian factory. Traditionally a coat manufacturer, our factory has the ability to be more creative in the make than a traditional trouser manufacturer by using the finishes and detailing found in outerwear on our trouser range. The Archback style this season is available in a selection of the season’s colours including khaki with a distressed wash, Tobacco and Ash Grey all overdyed on a medium-weight Italian cotton.

The ‘Technical Thai Pant’ design is a unique cross between a snow pant and traditional Thai trouser, with a lot of room in the seat and a low slung crotch and gusset. The trouser has a banana seam detail running down the front of the leg, this gives a great shape and is darted at the back to create a sculptured shape. A great silhouette with a lot of volume, this casual pant is available this season in Supa Wet fabric and features front and back bonded pockets, with waterproof zips adding a high tech finish to the overall look. New this season is the Snow Pant a style that has evolved from the Thai Pant and features the same banana seam design but with a much more casual feel. Flap pockets fastened with a Griffin stud replace bonded slant pockets and the overdyed, medium-weight Italian cotton absorbs the richness of the dye. This design is available in a range of colours including vintage-washed Sand and Ash Grey.

The ‘Flying Pant’ is a heritage Griffin style developed from original military Parachute uniforms, the most distinctive styling detail being the darted knee patches used originally to re-enforce the pant. This season we have shed the elasticated waistband for a cleaner front rather than the track pant feel of last season. The hem we’ve finished with a ribbed cuff and the crotch is low slung.  We have adjusted the pocket structure this season, the front flap pockets are fastened with Griffin studded and we’ve swapped the button-fastened single pocket design on the pack for two jean style patch pockets. We are also offering this pant in the Supa Wet fabric option with technical waterproofed front zip pockets.

The ‘Guerilla Pant’ is a style that expresses the punk element of Griffin a pant that was design back in the days of Griffin Laundry, inspired by bondage and the punk music scene, the pant has evolved over many years. This season the Guerilla pant leaves it’s original black and red colour palette for a more relaxed, vintage feel with a range of overdyed and distressed colour options including Cobalt Blue and Dove. The most distinctive feature on this pant are the zips on the back of the leg, when zipped up they give a slimmer fit. The fit is darted so whilst the design is quite a wide leg pant when the zips are fastened the trouser transforms into a much skinny look. The crotch is low slung and filled with plenty of volume and fitted with three front zip pockets and two back patch pockets.

10 years ago we developed a collection that was inspired by bikers and their clothing, from the padded knees in their trousers to panelling specifically cut to be comfortable when seated. From this research emerged the Griffin ‘Biker Pant’, a style that is slim and features A-symmetrical panelling on the leg. Intricately panelled at the knee the trouser takes on a 3-Dimesional shape even when lying flat, oval panelling at the front as well as a seam behind the knee adds a fantastic fit to the pant. This season the Biker pant is available in a range of cotton colourways and washes as well as a Supa Wet option.

The ‘Kingston Pant’ is a slim tailored pant, proportionately mastered with a low slung crotch. Featuring flap pockets with a stud fastening on the hips and two patch pockets on the back. The pant is available in a range of cotton washes as well as Supa Wet which features internally taped seams visible at the hem which features a 2” turn up.

The ‘USMC Long Short’ features the same military styling as the USMC trouser; large combat pockets and a low slung, gusseted crotch. This longer length short finishes at the calf and makes a great winter alternative to a trouser. Manufactured in Harris Tweed the short is great for pedalling about town we’ve part-lined the short to avoid any irritation, which also adds a little extra warmth as well.

Sweats

This season sees the launch of the ‘Hooded Button Fleece’, made from bubble fleece this piece is a button through design fastened with Italian-made buttons. The design features a fitted hood and is finished at the hem and cuffs with cotton ribbing. The front pockets are laser cut and fitted with a waterproof taped zip.
